<image:caption>Yet another horror movie that at first seems like it’ll just be another “documentary/candid camera gone wrong.” While I’d say the film definitely falls into that category, as things start to go wrong and unsettling, I’d argue that we as viewers get more than we bargained for. This isn’t as simplified as a lot of other “film crew ends up facing real peril” movies tend to be. When the plot begins speeding toward its climax and then barreling to the end, I found it way more fun than other movies of its ilk. <image:caption>I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for folk-horor. And period films, as a matter of fact! The Apostle does both of these things with aplomb, and I really enjoyed the story, acting, writing, and visuals of this film. Oh, and did I mention it also involves a cult? <image:caption>I still cannot wrap my head around this movie. With a cast including Justin Long, Hailey Joel Osment, and even Johnny Depp, this film spans a bizarre spectrum of wtf. On one hand, I’m partially convinced it’s a farce. On the other, though, the body horror at play was so legitimately unsettling to me that I couldn’t write the movie off as being entirely a joke. It certainly gives off the vibe of a movie the actors wanted to make, as opposed to necessarily thought would be a blockbuster. That said, I have no clue. I wouldn’t call it a good movie. I wouldn’t even call it a good horror movie (yes, they have slightly different parameters in my mind). But it was a weirdly enjoyable watch, and the bizarro elements have clearly stuck with me. <image:caption>Believe it or not, a long-time priest friend suggested this one to me and my husband! I don’t know that it can be qualified a horror movie so much as maybe a fantasy one. But all the same, I wanted to include it here for its bizarro content. Don’t expect anything ground shattering. This has the vibes of a student film with a $0 budget and an idea that was cooked up (potentially) at the last minute. Think of the power-points you had to make 5 minutes before class started your freshman year of high school. That said, it is funny! If you watch it with no other expectations than to enjoy how ridiculous it is to see a priest realize he has the powers to turn into a velociraptor that fights evil ninjas, then you’ll have a good time! <image:caption>Supernatural threat vs. real-life threat to the characters is a dividing point for some people who enjoy horror. I think part of what’s great about this film is that the two seem to exist in tandem. It’s always fun to me when a movie’s plot gives the viewer a plausible explanation for a good portion of the film just to say, “but wait, there’s more!” I think this movie walks that line in an excellent balance act and definitely makes for an enjoyable watch! I don’t know if my husband and I were really looking for a movie to watch or just something to have one while we each did our separate hobbies after the kids had gone to bed, BUT, we clicked on this one, thought it sounded decent, and then both got invested. One of the reasons I enjoyed this one so much was the folk-horror element to it, and how that folk element continues to thrive in the world the film creates. I thought the twist was good, too! <image:caption>This is another of those movies which seems way more farcical than actually meant to be a horror. It’s a wild ride, but the premise, though amusing, is all the same an interesting premise for a horror film. A dash-cam streamer who makes her content by driving around and acting goofy ends up running an errand that goes awry. It’s at parts ridiculous, threatening, and over the top. Things start to go awry when a man’s estranged, best friend arrives asking for help. This is a psychological horror mixed with extraterrestrials and elements of trippy surrealism (or is it??). <image:caption>For some reason, this little gem seems to be slipping underneath most people’s noses, which is a darn shame because it’s good! Yes, at first it seems trope-tastic and washed up (Americans go to investigate the disappearance of an American traveler who vanished in a tiny, Polish town where the villagers don’t speak English and are wary of outsiders). The thing about this movie is, though, that it thrives on subversion by taking your jaded expectations and giving them a good twist. It’s not the most visually appealing movie. It definitely has a lower budget than those big, hyped up films. But dang it if it isn’t a surprising little gem of a horror movie! <image:caption>Just because a film has a lower budget or indie/film-school quality does not mean it’s automatically bad! Why say this? There’s definitely something slightly “underwhelming” about the making of this movie, but it by no means extends to the plot! Just a friendly reminder not to write it off when that “off” quality occurs to you. My husband and I both thought that this film was intriguing, filled with good horror moments, and even a bit emotionally devastating. Grief-horror fans, this is my recommendation to you! Like most of the others on this list, my husband and I just sort of stumbled into this movie and were pleasantly surprised by how engrossing we found it! <image:title>Blog & Updates - Dark and Spooky Reads Perfect for Younger Readers - 5. The Thief of Always — Clive Barker</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that the man behind horror classics like Candy Man, and Hellraiser wrote and illustrated a chapter book for young readers? Well, let me introduce you to this marvelous horror story! This is another one of those titles that took root in my heart and mind and has been there ever since. It wasn’t until my adulthood that I realized the book was by Clive Barker (but boy, did that make some sense to me when I did)! I read this in school at around the age of 12, and will say that I found parts of it genuinely scary/terrifying. Even so, I really loved it. There’s something about reading a book that seems to treat you as a “real” person when you’re that age — as in, this book doesn’t pull too many punches. (I don’t mean gore or anything, just that the terror is pretty existential, and the ending is more bittersweet than happy). An excellent read regardless of age!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I don’t know that I could call this a list of recommendations if I did not include Stein, the King of Horror for younger readers! Although I never read Goosebumps growing up, I did watch the show in my preteen/teen years and thoroughly enjoyed it! These books are both kid friendly/accessible and well written. Some of them are downright freaky! As I said, I haven’t read Goosebumps, but I have read the following recommendation that also happens to be written by R. L. Stein…</image:caption>

<image:caption>I read this when I was 10 or 11, and, WOW, did it ever stick with me! This is far more a dark fantasy than horror, but there’s some blood at the final battle of the book that I was certainly surprised by when I read it. Not much blood and gore — it was just surprising! It is a book geared towards younger readers, so I wouldn’t say it’s inappropriate, but it is intense at times.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I think the easiest way to describe this is, “Agatha Christie for kids.” Like Bailey School Kids, the focus is not on horror or scares so much as it is on intrigue and mystery. There are no monsters, but there are riddles and fascinating characters, and some peculiar events. I loved this book as a kid, so much so that the title has lived rent-free in my head!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog & Updates - Dark and Spooky Reads Perfect for Younger Readers - 6. Something Wicked This Way Comes — Ray Bradbury</image:title>
<image:caption>As a kid, I was given a collection of Bradbury’s short stories and fell in love with his writing. A lot of what drew me to his stories was the bizarro elements, but also something in the way he wrote. I read this book (which my library has shelved in the Young Adult — aka, teen — section) a month or two ago and remembered all that had endeared me to Bradbury as a child: He wrote as an adult who had that bittersweet memory of what being a child is, and what growing up means/can mean. This book, like the others, is not dripping blood or gore or other horror elements that might be inappropriate. It does include existential terror, and some genuine threats to the main characters, though. An excellent choice for younger readers dipping their toes into darker fiction, and an even better read for adults who recall their childhood fancies.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog & Updates - Dark and Spooky Reads Perfect for Younger Readers - 2. Steintinglers — R. L. Stein</image:title>
<image:caption>These collections of short stories are quick reads with creepy premises. Again, kid-friendly doesn’t mean “without scares.” Honestly, even as adult, there’s one particular story that I found simultaneously creative and disturbing! In my opinion, the best part of these short stories are the little introductions that Stein wrote, explaining why and how he came up with the idea/theme. It’s a nice little touch, for sure!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog & Updates - Dark and Spooky Reads Perfect for Younger Readers - 3. Bailey School Kids — Debbie Dadey & Marcia Thornton Jones</image:title>
<image:caption>Like Goosebumps, this is a series or collection of books. Unlike Goosebumps, these stories generally feature the same group of kids. I read these as a youngster and l-o-v-e-d them! Unlike Stein books, I’d say that these stories are far less about scares and a bit more about mystery or puzzling out bizarro characters/situations (think: Scooby Doo). Mostly, the books are filled with monsters. Honestly, they’re such fun books and I intend to go back and read a few, especially as my kids grow into that reading level.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If the last two suggestions were too tame for you and you want your summer read to be a lot more visceral, then I recommend checking out this book. It has a little bit of everything summer — drive-in movies, horror films, a trip to get ice cream, blossoming relationships, stalking, summer lovin’ (of the non-consensual variety), gore, a lot of triggering content, and some seriously deranged characters. It’s a wild ride, but weirdly hard to put down — if you can stomach it. TW: Plenty of gore, SA, rape, incest, hostages, language, lots of sexual content, implied necrophilia</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although it isn’t a horror, I believe in the cousin-like relationship between the thriller genre and the horror genre, generally considering thriller a subgenre of horror. (Or do you think horror is subgenre of thriller? Let me know!) As such, this book is a great, intense read. It’s easy to read and barrel through, which is great because you’ll probably be quickly invested and wondering what the heck is going on. TW: Implied incest and pedophilia</image:caption>

<image:caption>Full disclosure, I have yet to read this collection of King short stories.
